Background of the Study
Government interventions aimed at reducing school dropout rates have been critical in enhancing educational outcomes in many urban areas. In Epe Local Government Area, Lagos State, various strategies—such as scholarship programs, free school meal initiatives, and community engagement—have been implemented to address high dropout rates (Ojo, 2023). These interventions are designed to alleviate financial burdens, improve school attendance, and provide motivational support to students at risk of leaving school prematurely (Balogun, 2024). Despite these efforts, dropout rates remain a concern, as socio-economic challenges, family pressures, and inadequate school facilities continue to affect student retention. Recent studies emphasize that while government policies have made some progress, their effectiveness is often undermined by poor implementation and monitoring mechanisms (Adesanya, 2025). This study aims to evaluate the overall effectiveness of these interventions in reducing dropout rates in Epe, highlighting the successes and shortcomings of current strategies and suggesting areas for improvement (Ibrahim, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Epe Local Government Area continues to experience high dropout rates despite the implementation of government interventions. Financial constraints, inadequate infrastructure, and social factors contribute to students leaving school prematurely. The existing interventions have not fully addressed the underlying causes of dropouts, leading to persistent educational challenges. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions and identify the factors that limit their success (Olanrewaju, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the current government interventions aimed at reducing dropout rates.

  • To identify the challenges limiting the effectiveness of these interventions.

  • To propose improvements for reducing dropout rates and enhancing student retention.

Research Questions

  • What government interventions are currently implemented in Epe?

  • How effective are these interventions in reducing dropout rates?

  • What improvements can be made to enhance student retention?

Research Hypotheses

  • H₁: Government interventions have a significant impact on reducing dropout rates.

  • H₂: There is a significant relationship between financial support programs and student retention.

  • H₃: Addressing infrastructural challenges will further reduce dropout rates.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it evaluates government interventions in reducing dropout rates in Epe. The findings will guide policymakers in enhancing educational programs and strategies to improve student retention and academic success (Akinlabi, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to assessing government interventions in reducing dropout rates within Epe Local Government Area, Lagos State. It does not cover private school initiatives or broader national educational policies.

Definitions of Terms

  • Dropout Rates: The percentage of students who leave school before completing their education.

  • Government Interventions: Policy measures and programs implemented by the government to address specific social or educational issues.

  • Student Retention: The ability of an educational institution to keep students enrolled through the completion of their studies.
